AAF Trustee and Albay native Cynthia T. Buiza reads from her debut poetry collection.

Albay Arts Foundation launched the debut poetry collection of Cynthia T. Buiza, one of the Foundation’s incorporators and trustees, on December 3, 2022. Titled The Future is a Country I Do Not Live in, Buiza’s book was published by Paloma Press in San Francisco, CA.

The launch started with a serenade from Jan Aldrin Belisario, President and Founding Creative Director of The Dawani Project, and member of AAF. After AAF President Rafael Buemia welcomed the attendees, Buiza read several of her poems, in both English and Bicol. She also related stories that served as her inspirations in writing some of the poems.

Buiza wrote the poems in the collection over several decades, while working in various non-profit organization in several countries. She currently served as Executive Director of the California Immigration Policy Center, based in Los Angeles, CA.  Prior to this collection, she co-authored the book Anywhere But War, chronicling the armed conflict and internal displacement in Banda Aceh, Indonesia.

A Q&A followed her reading. The event was concluded with book signing and photo taking.

Star Prior is AAF’s Secretary. She is an educator who has worked with Ateneo de Naga and several Cambridge International Schools in Indonesia and Myanmar. She is currently an Assistant Examiner for Cambridge University.
